Greenwich is a historic district in southeast London, located within the Royal Borough of Greenwich. It lies on the south bank of the River Thames and is internationally known for its maritime history, architecture, and its association with Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). The area is part of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site, recognised for its cultural and scientific significance.

One of Greenwich’s most iconic landmarks is the Royal Observatory, established in 1675 by King Charles II. It played a key role in the history of astronomy and navigation and is the location of the Prime Meridian, the line from which all time zones are measured. Visitors can stand astride the Meridian Line and explore exhibits related to the development of timekeeping and astronomy.

Another major site is the Old Royal Naval College, designed by Sir Christopher Wren in the late 17th century. Originally built as the Royal Hospital for Seamen, the buildings later became part of the Royal Naval College. They now house museums, exhibitions, and event spaces. The nearby Queen’s House, also designed by Wren, is an elegant 17th-century villa and now forms part of the National Maritime Museum.

Greenwich Park, one of London’s oldest royal parks, offers sweeping views over the Thames and the city skyline. It is a popular place for walking and leisure, and includes formal gardens, ancient trees, and deer. The park forms a key part of the historic landscape alongside the observatory and museum buildings.

The town centre of Greenwich retains a village-like atmosphere, with a lively market, independent shops, pubs, and restaurants. The Cutty Sark, a 19th-century tea clipper preserved in dry dock, is another major attraction, offering insight into Britain’s maritime trade.

Greenwich is easily accessible by train, DLR, riverboat, and bus. Its combination of history, green space, and riverside setting makes it one of London’s most popular and distinctive areas.
