Eccup Reservoir

Eccup Reservoir

The Eccup reservoir was first constructed in 1843 on land owned by the Earl of Mexborough. At this time, it was an important and necessary site for water supply to the city of Leeds, as well as a local attraction.

In 1897, an extension to eccup reservoir created more storage space for water that was needed during dry spells. This extension increased the area of eccup reservoir from 59 hectares (148 acres) to 91 hectares (225 acres) and raised the dam by 25 feet (7.6 m), which also increased its average depth from 12 feet (3 m) to 22 feet (7 m).
