Colyton

Colyton

Colyton is a town in Devon, England, situated on the River Coly between Seaton and Honiton in East Devon.

The town dates back to the Saxon period and was mentioned in the Domesday Book under the name of Colitone. It grew rapidly in the early medieval period as a market town and wool trading centre. By the 16th century it was one of Devons most prosperous towns, but declined after the English Civil War as its textile industry went into decline. The town remained an important agricultural centre until the 20th century.

The parish church of St Andrew is one of the largest in Devon and has a 15th-century tower. The town hall (now the museum) is a medieval building, and there are several 17th-century houses. The town was the terminus of the narrow gauge Eastleigh and Ringwood Railway which operated from 1895 to 1901.
