Billinge Wood by munki-boy

Billinge Wood

A beautiful and interesting woodland on the slopes of Billinge Hill in Lancashire with plenty of trails that might be a little steep for some.

There is an old quarry with some evidence of walls and foundations of what was probably the old quarry buildings or perhaps what was once an old farm - certainly the buildings were still in use after the quarry was started sometime before the early 1800s. The quarry has a small pond or lake in the centre but it is quite muddy and overgrown.

The paths in Billinge Wood are used for mountain bike trails:

“As part of Blackburn with Darwen Council’s commitment to encourage cycling and improve levels of physical activity amongst children and adults, new mountain bike trails have been created in Billinge Woods, Witton Country Park.

The new trails form a figure of eight loop within the woods and are designed to offer cyclists a challenging and technical cycling experience catering for experienced and also budding mountain bike riders.

The two trails ‘Tricky sixty’ and ‘Trail of two trees’ are both approximately 600m in length and when completed as a circuit offer cyclists roughly 2 miles of mountain biking pleasure” - Blackburn Council
