Latin name: Anas penelope

The Wigeon is a medium-sized duck with a round head and short bluish bill. Males are grey with a pinkish-buff breast, rusty-orange head with a yellow stripe and white wing patches, that can be seen when they fly. Females have orangey-brown plumage. The Wigeon’s call is a memorable whistling.

The Wigeon is a dabbling duck and they eat aquatic plants and grass and graze near to water.

Wigeon are a winter visitor, flying in from Iceland, Scandinavia and Russia. They gather in large numbers, on wet grasslands, floodplain meadows, flooded gravel pits, reservoirs and in coastal areas.

It breeds in Scotland and Northern England in very small numbers.

It can be seen throughout the country all year round, but can be seen in greater numbers in winter.
