Tapered Drone Fly

Latin name: Eristalis pertinax

The Tapered Drone Fly have pale front legs and have a pair of orange markings on the dorsal plate of the abdomen. The male has a tapering abdomen.

The larva of the Tapered Drone Fly is a rat-tailed maggot. They live in drainage ditches, puddles around manure piles, sewage and places containing water badly polluted with organic matter.

They can be seen between March and November, with peaks in May and August and can be found in several habitats from wetland, to farmland to suburban gardens and parks.

It is common and widespread throughout Britain.
