Silver-ground Carpet

Silver-ground Carpet

Latin name: Xanthorhoe montanata

The Silver-ground Carpet moth displays a wide range of differing depths of colour, although they all have a distinctive whitish ground colour.

The adult moths fly at night and are attracted to light. They can be seen from May through to July and can often be disturbed during the day from low vegetation in woodlands and grassy ditches.

The caterpillars are grey with a purplish-brown back and can be seen from June to August. They feed on bedstraws, cleavers and primrose.

A common species throughout Britain.
