Common Wasp

Common Wasp

Latin name: Vespula vulgaris

The Common Wasp can be identifed by the four large yellow spots at the back of the thorax and the equal thickness yellow stripe on each side of the pronotum. They usually have a black anchor-like shape in the centre of their face and a vertical yellow band behind the eye which is broken by a black spot. They are active mainly between June and September. They build grey, spherical, papery nests in holes underground or in building roof spaces. Like most wasps, they are attracted to rotting fruit.
