Carrion Crow

Carrion Crow

Latin name: Corvus corone

The Carrion Crow has black plumage with a purple or green sheen and a shiny black beak.

Carrion Crows are highly intelligent and are among the most intelligent of all animals. It is often quite fearless, although it can be wary of man.

They are usually found alone or in pairs.

Carrion Crows will harass predators and competitors that enter into their territory and threaten them or their offspring. They also engage in group mobbing as a method to defend themselves.

As the name suggests, they eat carrion of all kinds, but will eat insects, earthworms, grain, fruits, seeds, small mammals, amphibians and scraps. They will also steal eggs. Carrion Crows are scavengers by nature, which is why they tend to be seen at sites inhabited by humans. They will also harass birds of prey and sometimes even foxes for their kills.

Carrion Crows are found almost everywhere, from city centres to upland moorlands and from woodlands to the seashore.

They are common and widespread in Britain throughout the year.
