Athous haemorrhoidalis (Click Beetle)

Athous haemorrhoidalis (Click Beetle)

Latin name: Athous haemorrhoidalis

Athous haemorrhoidalis is a Click Beetle with a black head and thorax and strongly ribbed brown wing cases. The whole body is covered with greyish-brown hairs.

The adults live on flowers of various types of vegetation, eating pollen and can be found in hedgerows and meadows, from May through to August.

Like other Click Beetles, the joint between the thorax and abdomen forms a flexible hinge and if disturbed the beetle can flick itself into the air, which makes a loud clicking sound. It also uses this ability to right itself if it falls onto its back.

The larvae have a mixed diet. They prey on the Winter Moth and eat the roots of plants, mostly grasses.

A common species throughout Britain.
