Warrens Hall Local Nature Reserve
Warrens Hall Local Nature Reserve, also known as Warren’s Hall Country Park, is located on the border of Sandwell and Dudley in the West Midlands, near Netherton. The site covers around 17 hectares and was officially designated as a Local Nature Reserve in 1996. It is managed by Sandwell Council and forms part of a wider area of green space alongside Bumble Hole Nature Reserve.
The reserve is a mix of habitats that reflect both natural regeneration and the area’s industrial past. Visitors will find ponds, streams, grassland, hedgerows, woodland, and stretches of the Dudley No. 2 Canal. One of the most striking historical features is Cobb’s Engine House, which once housed a steam engine that pumped water from deep coal mines into the canal system. The old Netherton Tunnel entrance is also nearby, offering a glimpse of the region’s industrial heritage.
There are good paths throughout the site, making it popular for walking, cycling, and enjoying the scenery. Fishing is allowed on two ponds by arrangement with the Old Hill Angling Club. A volunteer-run visitor centre by the canal provides information, light refreshments, and toilet facilities.
The area attracts a wide variety of wildlife, including waterfowl, amphibians, dragonflies, and woodland birds. On clear days, you can see out towards the Rowley Hills, the Clent Hills, and even as far as the Malverns.
Every September, the Black Country Boating Festival takes place here, filling the canals with narrowboats and drawing crowds for music, stalls, and family activities.
Warren’s Hall is a peaceful place to explore, combining the atmosphere of an old industrial landscape with pockets of natural beauty and a welcoming community feel. It is an excellent example of how former industrial land can be transformed into valuable green space for people and wildlife.
