Temple Wood

Temple Wood is a prehistoric site. It is also a designated scheduled monument.

The site is made up of two stone circles.

The larger southern circle contains a ring of 13 standing stones about 12 metres (40 feet) in diameter. In the past it probably had 22 standing stones. In the centre is a burial cist surrounded by a smaller circle of stones about 3 metres (10 feet) in diameter. The southern circle’s first incarnation may have been constructed around 3000 BC.

The northern stone circle is less impressive. The only significant features are a long central stone and a single stone placed near the edge of the circle. This circle may have originated as a timber circle.

Temple Wood was named by landowner, Sir John Malcolm. He planted a wood around the circles at the end of the 1800’s and named it Temple Wood, as this is what he thought the purpose of the site was for.
